With iHeartRadio you can listen to various music genres, your local or global news, sports, culture, politics and weather. You can enjoy curated playlists and generate your own stations, based on the music you love. The app offers lots of personalization options, so you can discover new music and enjoy the artists you love long.

The interface of the app is similar for iOS and Android versions. iHeartRadio features tabs for your library, for all the radio stations it delivers to you, for playlists prepared for you or by you, and for podcasts you’ll never run out of. Within each of these tabs, you can easily navigate to find what you’re looking for, use the search field, and enter Settings by the gear-like icon.

Usability — 5/5

First of all, the radio plays greatly even if your Internet speed isn’t perfect. No matter if you select a local or an overseas station; Internet equalizes all of these. It’s optimized for low speed, with caching involved, so you can drive your car through distant areas and never run out of music, even when offline.

The search system is flexible, and you can add tracks to your playlists or generate stations according to your tastes. Naming all the genres won’t fit into this iHeartRadio review, but no matter whether you lire rock or reggae, gospel or Oriental music, pop or classical music – you got it.

And yes, even in the free version the app can play music in the background, connect your external speakers, and store your settings in the cloud. But the premium subscription delivers you the better version of the same experience.

Cross-Platform Use — 5/5

The app is available for iOS and Android, both apps being very similar in terms of design and features. In addition, you can listen to your iHeartRadio stations on virtually any platform, with an actual web browser and the decent Internet. Even if the iHeartRadio for Android isn’t available in your country, you can just download its .APK, install it manually and create an account. It’s a bit trickier with iOS, but changing your country in your Apple ID must help.

In-App Purchases

Though the basic service is free, iHeartRadio offers its premium subscription for just $4.99/mo. It includes ads removal, no commercials in broadcasts, more stations available and better personalization options. We consider the pricing quite decent, and being cross-platform makes iHeartRadio a bit better option than Apple or Google Music (though still rivaled by Spotify, Pandora, and others).

The Bottom Line

iHeartRadio offers the best of both worlds: the conventional radio stations lend their musical taste, deejays’ and selectors’ work, and curating music. And the Internet adds the unlimited music library and the possibility to tune in your personal stations right to your tastes.
