Like most post-WhatsApp messengers, imo provides you unlimited texting, audio and video calls within its network. Imo supports also sending photos and videos, sharing locations, attaching .GIF files to messages, creating group chats and calls. The app also features elements of a social network, letting you post statuses and stream live videos.

This app looks simpler than most messengers. There are tabs for chats, for contacts, and “Explore” tab for extras. You can select the language from within the app, select your avatar and nickname, blacklist contacts, and adjust the app the way you like. It only has a daytime color scheme, but, as Android and iOS roll out built0-in night mode, imo can catch up with it.

Usability — 5/5

While handling chats is similar to, say, iMessage, the Contacts tab looks more like that of Telegram or Viber. By tapping a contact, you access the menu that lets you text or call them. While calling, you can enable or disable the camera.

“Explore” tab that lets you search for groups nearby, invite friends, watch live streams from around you, or start your own. This tab also has a folder with all the files you sent or received via imo, so they are easy to access.
The developers of imo are quite aware of other messengers. So, as you install it, you have an option of inviting your friends via WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or other messaging apps. If you send them invitations, they will receive the link to the installation page.

The app is well optimized for low-speed networks, partly because it’s trendy in Central Asia where the most popular messengers are banned.
