Uber
Uber is the app for ordering a ride that revolutionized the taxi industry. With this app you just need to make two taps to order your ride and watch it approach. No need for cash: just enter your credit card, Uber does the rest. You can download Uber for any modern mobile device and enjoy it everywhere.
Functionality — 5/5
If you want to take a ride, all you need to do is confirm your location, detected automatically, and set your destination. The driver arrives soon, as the system connects you with the closest drivers. The app also lets you select the desired class of your ride, share the costs with other passengers, and use no cash, as it digitizes all the transfers.
Design — 5/5
Uber is very visual, showing you the map of your vicinity with available drivers around. As you request your ride and select the class, you can watch the car approach your location and make your latest moves according to that. As you’re riding, you can also see yourself on the map in real-time. Selecting anything, from the class of your ride to payment method, is intuitive. And strict conservative design adds some luxury.
Usability — 5/5
Uber review will remind reviews of other similar apps. Most of the screen is given to the map, for you to easier adjust locations and see the progress. By tapping the spots on the map you can adjust your current location or destination. The menus are intuitively understood too.
Uber shows you the approximate price of your ride, but it can drastically change in minutes if the demand is too high. So don’t be surprised if the ride gets more or less expensive just as you refresh the offer.
If Uber is active in your town, it will work properly. In some countries and places Uber introduces cash payments as well, catering to local traditions. One of the main issues about Uber is that it isn’t available worldwide. In some countries and even separate cities it’s banned because of local trade unions protesting or conflicts with local law. Uber does its best to regulate it but doesn’t always succeed.
Another feature Uber lacks so far is multiple destinations, while some rivals have it. But it may introduce it soon.
Cross-Platform Use — 5/5
So far (fall 2019) the app is available for iOS and Android. It’s also still here on Windows Phone, as long as this platform is supported (and it won’t be long). You can also do it on any device with an up-to-date browser on uber.com, after authorizing with your credentials. It may be useful if you use two accounts with two different cards for different purposes on the same device.
In-App Purchases
The app lets you request rides and pay for them. You can select the class of your ride, with correspondingly different cars and varying pricing. The same route’s cost may change throughout a day, due to demand fluctuations.
A recent update is uberPOOL, a feature letting you split the final cost into all the passengers if there are two or more of you. If you are willing to get the best money can get, select Uber Black and enjoy.
The Bottom Line
Uber has changed the entire industry, connecting passengers and drivers directly. Now in hundreds of cities you can request a ride with Uber, and even countries where Uber isn’t legal cannot resist its followers. So Uber is one of the must-have apps for your phone, whatever it is.
Supports cashless and (in select countries) cash payments;
Real-time map to track your driver;
No matter what country you are registered in.
The politics of the company may cause protests.
