Don’t believe the mayhem you may have seen in trailers. The game really features spectacular 3D scenes with effects and destruction. But they are just cutscenes combined with a 2D tactical game on the square-tiled field. Thus, the game is spectacular, and the gameplay doesn’t take powerful hardware. It seems strange in 2020, but an NVIDIA GeForce GT 750 and 4 GB RAM are quite enough to play it.

It’s a turn-based tactical RPG, like most games by BANDAI NAMCO of this series. You control your team of mecha pilots; when you send them to the battlefield, you must complete missions of destroying enemy mecha. There are many parameters (weapons, modifications, terrain capabilities, energy, hit points, and so on) you need to keep in mind or check before you move. After it’s made, you see a fight cutscene based on it, and it’s as great as those from anime series that inspired the game.

For fans of Western tactical games, SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays will seem too split. The basic part is calculational and intellectual rather than pure action. But when your moves are made, here comes the action. The units can fight on land, in the air, on water, or even in space, and it makes the calculation more challenging, and the cutscenes more diverse.

If you are a Gundam fan, you’ll be pleased to see units from series like Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, SEED, 00, and Iron-Blooded Orphans! These classical animated series from the 1990-2000s are among the most honored.

There is nothing complicated about controls, no matter if it’s a PC or a console version. Tactical games aren’t about fast response or complicated combos. Take your time to think. Make your moves in no hurry. The PC version only partially supports controllers, but it’s not the game that requires haptic feedback in your hands.

Replay Value 5/5

When you first see how many complicated parameters are involved, you understand that it will take many hours to learn them. And when you can tell them just by the look of your mechas, you are involved too deeply. The only rivals this game tolerates are other installments of the Gundam series, but they may seem less fun after this feast.

If you are one of the numerous fans of the Gundam franchise, this game is of no discussion. You must have it, learn it and play it in order to enjoy the entire universe – or multiverse of Gundam. The game is quite pricey, especially if you opt for Deluxe Edition and season passes.
