Fitbit
Fitbit is the official app by the famous manufacturer of fitness devices. This app can be used along with a Fitbit wearable or on its own. Download Fitbit for iOS or Android for free and take more care of yourself with it!
Design 5/5
It’s one of the simplest and easiest fitness apps in terms of design. It has few tabs, including Today, that displays all the stats on activity, nutrition, water consumption, and so on. Your aims and current results are displayed as diagrams readable at a glance.
The other sections are “Community” and “Discover”, for your social activity and your deeper explorations. Available with single taps, they display structured info the most readable way. Readability remains high, even on the Discover page with lots of pics.
Usability 5/5
It’s easy to connect your phone with a wearable with this app; you only need to select one from the list. Then the app delivers notifications and calls to your wrist and fetches your steps and heart rate from it. It’s okay if you don’t own a Fitbit device yet: the app will use the built-in sensors of your phone, though it reduces its precision.
Along with the wearable, the app detects your activity (or lets you select it manually) and then tracks your calories consumed and burned. You can add just names and quantities of products you consume: the app has a large database, and, in addition, you can just import your stats from third-party apps (like MyFitnessPal).
The most basic use of this app is setting targets. You need to enter your, say, current weight and your target weight to track your progress from the former to the latter. If you want, say, to lose weight, the app will calculate your daily calorie deficit necessary to reach it. And if you want it harder, you’ll enjoy lots of workouts and instructions, mostly in the premium version, though.
Features 5/5
Along with its core features, the Fitbit app has lots of options on customizing your devices. For example, with it you can easily download and install new faces for Fitbit watches. It also actively advertises its Fitbit Coach app, concentrating on fitness and workouts.
In-app purchases 4/5
The basic version of the app is downloadable for free (and it’s logical, as it’s mostly used by Fitbit device owners who have already paid). But it also offers the premium subscription for $9.99/mo, with audio and video workout instructions, personalized programs, sleep score details, and insights on your behavior and its impact.
The Bottom Line
Unlike other fitness device manufacturers, Fitbit offers quite a standalone service, with instructions on activity and nutrition, fitness coaching, food database, and, of course, tools for connecting wearables. There’s only one thing: don’t hurry to install Fitbit updates before you make sure they don’t bring new bugs.
Detailed tracking of your activity;
Curated plans and recommendations in Premium;
Integration with Google/Apple Health services.
GPSbased activities drain the phone’s battery.
