Safeway Deals & Rewards is an app with which you can save some cash when going to the Safeway grocery store and pharmacy. Choose coupons and deals from the everyday catalog and weekly ads.

This app has a simple design with brand red and white colors. Nothing is special about this design, but no one is expecting it to be extra amazing and creative. It does what it’s supposed to do — it has clear black fonts, big enough items to tap and navigate in between, understandable menu and all the necessary buttons. You don’t need more.

Usability 4/5

To get the maximum profit from this app, you have to choose a Safeway store near you. The app remembers the items you’ve purchased before and the deals you were interested in. It’s a reward system here. You earn points for each time you use a coupon from this app at the Safeway store. You get rewards for your points and then you use those to get an extra discount to your already existing deals. For example, you can save an extra 5$ for groceries for 5 rewards. Or you can choose to use rewards for gas discounts. But be careful and watch out for their expiration date.

The point is that you’ll have to use those deals next time you’re going shopping. Just enter your phone number registered in the app into the pin pad at the checkout. This way all your previously collected coupons in the app will automatically apply to your cart and you’ll save some cash.

There are a few important menu items here that you need to check out. First is Just for U deals where you can see all the coupons available based on what you’ve purchased before. You’ll see there all the deals available for everybody currently at the store as well. Weekly Ad is the same section but with more variety of offers in it. At My List, you see all the coupons you’ve chosen. BTW it’s better if you simply put ALL coupons available to your cart each time before you go shopping at Safeway. This way you can’t forget something you needed and maybe save cash for something you didn’t plan to buy at the beginning. At the Rewards section, you can see all the extra deals which are available for you. You have to choose them manually. And in the My Store section, you’ll find all the necessary info on your local Safeway store. Keep in mind that not all features work all around the US.

In-app Purchases 1/5

There are no purchases available in this app. You can use it only for collecting deals and coupons. Purchase at a physical Safeway store with it. There’s no ads-free version available either. But in a way, you do purchase here extra deals for your rewards but they’re not for real money — it’s an inside app system, so it doesn’t count.

The Bottom Line

What’s written earlier in this Safeway Deals & Rewards review is a way how this app is supposed to work in a perfect world. But often the app isn't much of a help when it comes to reality. Take the Weekly Ad section is made poorly, and when you try to add the item to your list it doesn’t show all the details about it. For example, you need to know how much the product should cost or how many items of that product you have to buy in order to use the discount. Sometimes the coupon doesn’t do what it was supposed to do and doesn’t give you the discount you were going for. That’s why we recommend putting all the coupons to your cart but no to read into them too much and be happy if you end up saving at least some dollars on the stuff you bought.
