Arise: A Simple Story full game can be described with one word: otherworldly. Its visuals bear a strong influence of indie games. A slightly disproportionate 3D figure of the main character makes him look likable and strangely humane. You don't see his facial features, only his gray beard. Which means that anyone can be in his place. Including you.

As you travel with the nameless nomad from one world to another, you discover the lavish beauty of the game. Giant forest lilies, dandelions, and busy slugs, blinding snowstorms, thrilling mountains that reach the stars. And woods, in which you see ominously glowing eyes of some eerie beings — it is a pure optic feast.

Arise: A Simple Story gameplay is a rare treat. You begin as a nomad who gets cremated on a funeral pyre. Not that optimistic, right? However, what's going to happen next is enthralling. The nomad's spirit begins a spiritual journey in a supernatural world.

Each level you'll visit represents a phase of his life. Starting with childhood, in which froggies and butterflies are grotesquely big, you'll go through more stages of life. There will be phobias, joys, sadness, losses — everything that normally accompanies human existence. And every part of growing up is represented as a hypnotically beautiful or bloody frightful level.

The biggest gimmick of the game is its time manipulation mechanics. For example, you can control time to freeze objects. A falling boulder can be used as a platform this way. And fire can be turned into a torch or a weapon of mass destruction.

Controls are quite simple. E.g., Arise: A Simple Story PS4 version requires usage of analog sticks to use time magic. The rest is intuitive you'll learn how to swing on grapevines or set things ablaze momentarily.
