Flotsam offers beautiful graphics and a good soundtrack design. It is really cute to look at stuff, animations are smooth and everything feels very polished overall. The building elements and characters look nice. With lovely graphics and quite interesting mechanics, it's really a great little game. It looks refreshing and cute. However, it could have a better zoom and camera angle so you could see more details.

Gameplay 4/5

Flotsam has simple but nice gameplay. You have to collect resources of Plastic Waste and Wood by hand setting up locations for drifters to salvage and gather such things. You should really pay attention to that. You can complete areas or focus on building cities. Some of you may struggle in the beginning and waste some resources as you may not really know what to do. But over time, you will understand that you can't stay in one place for a long time. You are a hobo and you have to change your location and move the city. As soon as you get used to moving the city everything becomes easier, but ate the same time remains challenging enough to make you want to continue playing. All in all, there are around three or four hours of content for you to almost unlock and build and see everything. So the gameplay needs more depth, more randomness, and more aspects to manage. But given this is an early access game, this thing could still get improved in the future.

Flotsam has a focus on balancing resources and staying in one place and at the same time needing to move to find another of a resource. Controls in Flotsam are well-made. Players can change the game speed with the help of hotkeys. The building mechanics in the game are great, but it would be better if there was a way to preview your buildings before you do them or to cancel them before they have been built. Also, sometimes there is some confusion when controlling camera movement.

Replay Value 4/5

Flotsam is a really good game with great potential. However, the level of replayability is uncertain for now. As it was mentioned before, the game does not have much content currently. It may be due to its early access, so there is hope that this problem will be fixed in future updates.

The Bottom Line

Flotsam offers its players sympathetic graphics, creative new idea and smooth working gameplay. It is set in a flooded world with a group of stranded survivors. You as a player can guide these survivors through the world while recycling all the garbage that is found in the ocean. As for an early access game, it is a great survival simulator with lots of potential.
