There are two things we love about Need for Speed. The first is how thoroughly the designers recreate cult car models from the real world. The second is the city in the daylight and in the nighttime. Both elements of the urban racing in Heat are made perfectly. Now it has 133 cars by famous vendors, and the city copies California environments. Traditionally, the camera is switchable, so you can view this splendor from the outside or through the windshield. And the music is loud and funky as hell.

It’s still about urban racing, legal and not so. The better you drive, the more money you earn on these races and the better cars you can afford. Then it goes on. The daytime races are legal; they won’t bring you as much money, but there’ll be no police after you. The illegal racing has more money, but it’s also a big risk. The more rep you earn, the more money you get, but the chances the police gets you also grow.

There is an open world, so you are not stuck to certain routes. You can take your time to explore it or just to drive around, seeing how it shines under the sun or glows neon in the night. You can also take extra quests and complete them to earn more money.

There is a mobile extension, named NFS Heat Studio. In it, you can modify your cars and upgrade them, and then upload to the core game. This interaction lets you keep track of the game news even while away from your console or PC.

The developers didn’t go far from the typical scheme. No matter if you play on PC, PS4 or Xbox One; there’ll always be a familiar way. Of course, a good gamepad will enhance the expression, and a wheel will provide even more immersion. But the game is quite controllable with a keyboard and mouse. On the other hand, if you decide to buy this game and donate some money, you better think of the benefit from the right peripherals.

The open world is always an invitation to spend more time with the game. Racing is a sort of drug, and the deeper you’re in, the more of it you want. Heat is the freshest installment, so it will take long for the next to come. And what it delivers is the atmosphere you want to return to, if you like it.

The Bottom Line

If you like video racing, you have no right to ignore Need for Speed: Heat. On the streets of Palm City day and night are two different worlds, but speed rules in each. With its mobile extension, you can stay in your garage even when away from the gaming device. It’s the most prominent racing event of late 2019, for sure.
