Children of Morta
Children of Morta is a story-oriented RPG, and for some gamers, that’s all they need to know to get genuinely interested. If you’re one of them, go ahead and get Children of Morta for your PC or Mac from Steam.
Graphics 5/5
The dungeons and enemy sprites in Children of Morta are all pretty standard for an RPG, but you still can’t help but be impressed by the masterfully executed graphics. Pixel art graphics are not easy to animate, and yet every animation and transition in the game looks gorgeous. The family home, which acts like a kind of base you keep coming back to throughout the game, is beautifully drawn and a joy to explore.
Gameplay 4/5
Children of Morta gets you pretty invested in the six playable characters early on, with numerous cutscenes displaying interactions between family members. You can choose between the family patriarch and his five children, all of whom have different abilities that will influence your combat tactics. Once you’ve made your choice, you’ll descend into the dungeons to find ancient items that can help awaken the spirits who can protect your world from Corruption.
The dungeons are the place where you’ll have to do a lot of grinding. Even if you’re an experienced RPG player, chances are the hordes of enemies are still going to be a bit much for you from time to time. The dungeons are procedurally generated, so you’ll have to start over in a completely new dungeon if you die. This makes you pay attention to different enemy types and learn about their behavior because there are entirely new decisions to make every time you die and you can’t just keep guessing or hacking away at your enemies.
Controls 5/5
The controls in Children of Morta are intuitive and fairly precise. Whether your current character uses a bow, a knife, or a hammer, you’ll always be able to execute precise attacks and time your moves perfectly.
Replay Value 4/5
With new dungeons available every time you play, you can keep crushing enemies long after you’re done with the final boss. Of course, there’s less incentive to do that now that you’ve defeated the Corruption, but you’ll probably get so attached to the Bergsons in the process you’ll want to revisit the game from time to time anyway.
The Bottom Line
Children of Morta is all about family, and it’s somehow easier to fight monsters knowing that there’s a home to come back to. The game is driven by the beautifully crafted story, and that alone is enough to enjoy Children of Morta. Factor in the countless dungeons, fun side quests, and useful upgrades to discover, and you get a very compelling RPG that’s not just for the hardcore fans of the genre.
