Prodigy Math Game
Prodigy Math Game is a unique hybrid of an RPG and a math course, guiding the young player through various mathematical problems they need to solve in order to proceed. Download Prodigy Math Game for iOS or Android to make math learning fun!
Graphics 4/5
Unlike some other edutainment apps, Prodigy is a seriously designed 2D game. The developers did their best to make a real RPG, reaching the level of the industry (though of that of the late 2000s), and involve math into the gameplay. So we have a colorful game with recognizable avatars and expressive NPCs. The developers escaped introducing unacceptable violence: the defeated enemies just run away. As for texts the game is rich in, all of them are artistically voiced, so poor literacy levels won’t be a problem.
Gameplay 5/5
It’s an RPG with lots of quests, its protagonist being a student of the magical Academy. On the way you’ll need to unlock various spells, obtain friends and pets, and eventually reach higher levels. The process is a story in itself, with a long storyline.
Almost every mission will require solving a simple problem or recognizing an object. The young player will learn to recognize shapes and colors, positions and orientation, count objects and name them. On later levels the problems will get harder.
The game is optimized to fit the school course. If the student is playing Prodigy within the school program, it requires a code provided by the teacher. With this code, the program will be synced with a learning program, so the levels will fit the current lessons. It’s not necessary, though: if you select the “Home” option at the registration, you are free to select any world and course you wish.
Controls 5/5
It’s one of the simplest games ever in terms of controls; there’s no reason to make the players master the controls while it’s all about mastering math and basic concepts. You just need to tap the option you select, no matter if you are proceeding through the map or having a battle. No sophisticated gestures or combos: you just need to answer correctly. It’s easy to avoid mistaps, because actions require confirmation after the player selects the answer.
Replay Value 5/5
It’s the sort of game that will sometimes need replaying to learn by repetition. It’s not much fun to replay the familiar levels, but still it’s more fun than just reading the textbooks. Adults (parents or teachers) may need to assist as the schoolkid plays a certain level for the first time, but then, when the level is through with no help, the knowledge comes for long.
The Bottom Line
It’s a great game to assist children in learning math, from its very basics. Recommended by parents or teachers, it will make learning more fun. Little will it provide for gifted kids (unless introduced in preschool age), but those experiencing problems will benefit from it.
Various sections of math covered;
No violence shown;
Syncing with school program if necessary;
Simplest controls possible.
Basics are of no interest for more advanced kids.
