The Battle Cats is a simple and funny Tower Offense game for iOS and Android, where you need to defend the world with your gang of dangerous but still cute cats. You can download The Battle Cats to your mobile for free, and enjoy it with its unlimited fantasy as long as you wish!

Graphics 4/5

Well, we know it’s a style, to make the game visually absurd and recompense it with humor. The visuals are intendedly weird, but still cute (as cute as it gets when it comes to battle). The cats look like primitive comic book cats (yet dogs, snakes, goats and other enemies look no better). It’s enough for a 2D tower offense game if you make it a good comedy. The music is quite comical too, with marching pathos so overflowing that it becomes fun.

Gameplay 5/5

It’s as simple as Tower Offense games get. There are two towers (yours and your opponent’s) that periodically produce units as towers generate enough money. You can spend money on generating units or upgrading the tower.

The developer didn’t emphasize violence that’s inevitable in this sort of game: the defeated fighters just elevate to the sky. Luckily, there is little detail in the picture. Still, it’s easy to tell your cats from the other side’s animals. Cats are cute, even the battle ones. And your enemies (as well as their tower) are inspired by the current country now you’re fighting in. Starting from Korea and Japan, the game travels around the world.

As you progress and liberate country by country, you unlock new types of cats, new bonuses, and more XP. XP is necessary to upgrade cats. The more you upgrade them, the stronger they are, but the cuteness remains the same.

Controls 5/5

Again, simplicity is the word. All you need to do is tap virtual buttons. There are ones for producing cats, for upgrading towers, and for shooting cannon to swipe the enemies away if they get too close. The upgrade menu between the levels is similarly tap-based. All the moves are done by the cats automatically, and you just cannot control them. DOTA2 fans may find this game a strange sort of familiar pleasure.

Replay Value 3/5

The Battle Cats is no fun to play from the beginning again, after you have unlocked some upgrades. The good news is you won’t have to: your progress is saved on a cloud. The bad news is that it requires a code (as if Google or Facebook authentication isn’t enough), and you need to write it down and keep.

Conclusion

The Battle Cats is one of the cutest and funniest games available for mobiles, with caricature visuals but solid gameplay and lots of upgrades and options. What in this game deserves the most love is its irony; it’s hard to keep from laughing when reading any text or looking at those brave invincible cats. The game is free; yet it offers you in-game cat food for real money if you wish to accelerate your progress.
